HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Someone develops Alzheimer's disease every 66
3seconds; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is the most expensive disease in
5America, with costs soaring past a quarter trillion dollars;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is on the rise with 5.4
8million Americans currently living with the disease and an
9estimated 16 million Americans projected to be diagnosed with
10the disease by 2050; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Currently, 220,000 people in Illinois live with
12the disease; there will be 260,000 in just seven years; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of
14death and an unrelenting, progressive condition that destroys
15brain cells; currently, no cure or even a way to slow the
16progression of the disease exists; Alzheimer's places
17significant financial burdens on families and businesses, with
18businesses losing billions a year in lost productivity and
19replacement expenses for employees who miss work or quit to
20care for a relative; and

1    WHEREAS, In Illinois in 2016, there were 588,000 Illinois
2family members and friends who provided over 670 million hours
3of unpaid care, valued at $8.47 billion, to their loved ones
4with Alzheimer's and other dementias; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The impact of Alzheimer's and other dementias on
6Illinois families, the health care system, and society as a
7whole is of great importance; the need for home and
8community-based services for those with Alzheimer's is on the
9rise and caregiver stress is at an all-time high; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a looming public health
11crisis and we call upon all policymakers to join in the efforts
12to raise awareness and to serve the hundreds of thousands of
13persons with Alzheimer's and other dementias in Illinois, their
14families, and caregivers; and
 
15    WHEREAS, On April 11, 2018, Alzheimer's advocates will
16speak up for the needs and rights of people with Alzheimer's
17and their families and ask the Illinois General Assembly to
18make Alzheimer's disease a priority public health issue in the
19State of Illinois; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
22declare April 11, 2018 as the "Annual Alzheimer's Association

1Advocacy Day" in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the Alzheimer's Association.
