HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, A spelling bee is a competition in which
3contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words,
4usually with a varying degree of difficulty; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Spelling bees help to promote literacy by
6providing children with a positive goal to achieve and a forum
7to display the fruits of their hard work; and
 
8    WHEREAS, In addition to improving spelling, spelling bees
9also aid children in learning concepts, improving
10comprehension, and developing study skills; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The benefits of spelling bees extend beyond
12language; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Students are required to spell words while in
14front of an audience; children also develop self confidence,
15communication and public speaking skills, and the ability to
16thrive under pressure; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Participating in a spelling bee teaches children
18lessons that can last a lifetime and can benefit even those who
19do not outlast all competitors; and

1    WHEREAS, Regional Offices of Education and Intermediate
2Service Centers may organize spelling bees and provide
3opportunities for school districts interested in participating
4in regional spelling bees; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
6HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7encourage all school districts to participate in the national
8spelling bee; and.
