HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuban President Raul
3Castro, and President of the National Center for Sex Education
4(CENESEX) invited the Puerto Rican Cultural Center of Chicago
5(PRCC) to lead a delegation to Havana from May 9-15, 2017; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The goal was to create an ongoing transnational
7dialog around HIV/AIDS transmission, how transmission rates
8are amplified by homophobia and transphobia, and how to
9confront and eradicate homophobia and transphobia in Cuba and
10the Puerto Rican/Latino communities in the United States; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Juan M. Calderon, PRCC Chief Operations Officer,
12coordinated the effort in the U.S.; he has gathered a
13complement of 18 LGBT activists, community organizers, elected
14officials, and business owners from New York, Massachusetts,
15and Illinois; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In Havana, CENESEX has hosted the "10ma Jornada
17Contra La Homofobia y La Transfobia Por Escuelas Sin Homofobia
18Ni Transfobia" conference of highly visible activities,
19cultural events, parade and educational efforts that aim to
20confront and eradicate homophobia and transphobia in Cuba, and
21in general to promote its mission, which is "The development of
22a culture of sexuality that is full, pleasurable, and

1responsible, as well as to promote the full exercise of sexual
2rights"; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Puerto Rican Cultural Center Juan Antonio
4Corretjer will be celebrating the 39th Annual Puerto Rican
5People's Parade, participate in Chicago's Gay Pride Weekend and
6Parade and host various community activities, receptions and
7community forums; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Andy Aquino Aguera, Director of Community
9Relations of the National Center of Sex Education and Malu
10Cano, Trans Cuba Coordinator visited Chicago to participate
11activities led by the Puerto Rican/Latino LGBTQ community; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Andy Aquino Aguera will be sharing best practices,
13discussions, conferences, workshops will help the PRCC enhance
14services for all the Puerto Rican/Latin@ LGBTQ community, but
15particularly the most vulnerable, the trans community in
16Chicago; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The Puerto Rican Cultural Center and TransLatina
18Coalition will honor the work and world wide leadership of Malu
19Cano, Trans Cuba Coordinator as this year's Paseo Boricua
20Ambassador and Honored Queen 2017 at the 10th annual Coronation
21of the Paseo Boricua Cacica Queen 2017 Gala; and

1    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois embraces the lesbian, gay,
2bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Puerto Rican/Latin@
3community and works to foster equality and inclusiveness
4statewide; and
 
5    WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in
6keeping with its time-honored traditions, to recognize and
7applaud partnerships abroad, events which foster ethnic pride
8and exemplify the cultural diversity which represents and
9strengthens the fabric of the communities of the State of
10Illinois; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13recognize and commend the Puerto Rican Cultural Center and the
14National Center of Sex Education transnational partnership on
15issues of wellness facing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and
16Transgender Puerto Rican/Latin@ community and enhances the
17profile of diversity which so strengthens the fabric of the
18community of the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution, suitably
20engrossed, be presented to Andy Aquino Aguera, Director of
21Community Relations of the National Center of Sex Education and
22Malu Cano, National Coordinator of Trans Cuba.
