HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Reverend Dr. L.
4Bernard Jakes on the 15th anniversary of his role as
5pastor/teacher at West Point Missionary Baptist Church in
6Chicago; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes has dedicated his life to serving his
8community as a teacher, leader, and advocate; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes began his education at the Nicholas
10Copernicus Elementary School and the Marie Sklodowska Curie
11Metropolitan High School for the Performing and Techical Arts;
12he furthered his education with a Bachelor of Arts from
13Elmhurst College, a Master of Arts from the Garrett Evangelical
14Theological Seminary at Northwestern University, and a Doctor
15of Ministry from the United Theological Seminary; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes has witnessed and worked to bring about
17numerous spiritual, financial, and administrative successes
18over his past 15 years as a leader at West Point Missionary
19Baptist Church; and
 
20    WHEREAS, The service and ministry of Dr. Jakes expands far
21beyond the walls of the church and into the streets of his

1community; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The service of Dr. Jakes includes the creation of
3the Operation H.O.P.E. Food and Clothing Pantry in response to
4the needs of his neighbors, which serves over 20,000 people
5annually; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes envisioned the creation of the Domestic
7Violence and Advocacy Ministry, where men, women, and children
8who experience physical and emotional violence receive
9support, resources, and love from their faith family at West
10Point Missionary Baptist Church; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes utilizes his voice as a local pastor to
12speak to policymakers as well as community members the truth as
13it relates to social justice and accountability; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The passion and commitment of Dr. Jakes to bring
15about social justice has led him to advise local, State, and
16federal politicians on issues vital to his faith community
17including sensible gun laws, increasing the minimum wage, and
18education funding reform; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
20HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21congratulate the Reverend Dr. L. Bernard Jakes on the 15th
