HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the Delta Sigma Theta
4Sorority as they visit the Illinois State Capitol for Delta
5Days on March 28, 2017; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Since its inception, Delta Sigma Theta has focused
7on five areas: economic development, educational development,
8international awareness and involvement, physical and mental
9Health, and political awareness and involvement; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In March 1913, six weeks after its founding, Delta
11Sigma Theta took part in its first action - marching in the
12women's suffrage parade in Washington, D.C.; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In 1989, the National Social Action Commission
14instituted Delta Days in the nation's capital, an annual
15legislative conference to increase members' involvement in the
16national public policymaking process; the annual conference
17includes legislative briefings, issue forums, and advocacy
18skills development; featured speakers include key
19policymakers, members of the United States Congress,
20Congressional staff members, and national issues experts;
21events are also held on the regional, State, and local levels;
22and

1    WHEREAS, Delta Days activities include briefings on
2legislative issues which impact the African-American
3community; skill development sessions such as "How to Lobby
4Effectively", "Understanding the Role of Congressional
5Staffers", and "How to Monitor and Track Legislation"; it also
6includes legislative visits to members of Congress; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta has 24 chapters in the State of
8Illinois, which is part of the Mighty Midwest Region, comprised
9of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio,
10Wisconsin, and West Virginia; it has 3,800 members in Illinois;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Today, the goals of Delta Sigma Theta are voter
13registration and voter education programs, combating voter
14suppression, full restoration of voting rights for individuals
15who have paid their debt to society (ex-offenders), affordable
16health care and access to quality health care, financial
17literacy and economic empowerment, support for historically
18African American colleges and universities, political
19awareness and involvement, gender equality, and ending racial
20profiling; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
22HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1recognize the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as they visit the
2Illinois State Capitol for Delta Days on March 28, 2017; and be
3it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to Delta Sigma Theta as a symbol of our respect and
6esteem.
