HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is important that we remember and honor those
3who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our State and
4nation; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Corporal Richard Lawrence Daugherty was born in
6Belleville, Illinois to Elvira and Charles Daugherty on
7February 3, 1949; he graduated from Waterloo Public High School
8in the spring of 1967; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Corporal Daugherty enlisted in the United States
10Army on November 17, 1967; he completed basic training at Fort
11Leonard Wood, Missouri and then finished Advanced Infantry
12Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana; and
 
13    WHEREAS, On May 1, 1968, Corporal Daugherty began his first
14tour of duty in Vietnam; while in the service, he received
15Expert Shooting Medals for machine guns and rifles, a Gold
16National Defense Medal, and the Purple Heart; and
 
17    WHEREAS, On August 26, 1968, Corporal Richard Lawrence
18Daugherty died in the line of duty from injuries sustained
19during a mortar attack; he was the first casualty from
20Waterloo, Illinois and the second casualty from Monroe County
21during the Vietnam War; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE
3CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of Illinois
4Route 3 from Highway 156 to Vanderbrook Drive as the "Corporal
5Richard Lawrence Daugherty Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
7is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
8State and Federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
9giving notice to the name "Corporal Richard Lawrence Daugherty
10Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Corporal Richard Daugherty and the
13Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
