SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
110 ILCS 947/55

    Amends the Higher Education Student Assistance Act. In a Section concerning a police officer or fire officer survivor grant, provides that, with respect to disabled police and fire officers, natural children need not be born before the disability occurred in order to receive the grant. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Higher Education Student Assistance Act is
5amended by changing Section 55 as follows:
 
6    (110 ILCS 947/55)
7    Sec. 55. Police officer or fire officer survivor grant.
8Grants shall be provided for any spouse, natural child, legally
9adopted child, or child in the legal custody of police officers
10and fire officers who are killed or who become a person with a
11permanent disability with 90% to 100% disability in the line of
12duty while employed by, or in the voluntary service of, this
13State or any local public entity in this State. Beneficiaries
14need not be Illinois residents at the time of enrollment in
15order to receive this grant. With respect to disabled police
16and fire officers, natural children need not be born before the
17disability occurred in order to receive this grant.
18Beneficiaries are entitled to 8 semesters or 12 quarters of
19full payment of tuition and mandatory fees at any
20State-sponsored Illinois institution of higher learning for
21either full or part-time study, or the equivalent of 8
22semesters or 12 quarters of payment of tuition and mandatory
23fees at the rate established by the Commission for private

1institutions in the State of Illinois, provided the recipient
2is maintaining satisfactory academic progress. This benefit
3may be used for undergraduate or graduate study. The benefits
4of this Section shall be administered by and paid out of funds
5available to the Commission and shall accrue to the bona fide
6applicant without the requirement of demonstrating financial
7need to qualify for those benefits.
