AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 1252

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 1252, AS AMENDED, by
3replacing everything after the enacting clause with the
4following:
 
5    "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
627-3.10 as follows:
 
7    (105 ILCS 5/27-3.10 new)
8    Sec. 27-3.10. Elementary school civics course of study. In
9addition to the instruction required to be provided under
10Section 27-3 of this Code, every public elementary school shall
11include in its 6th, 7th, or 8th grade curriculum, beginning
12with the 2018-2019 school year, at least one semester of civics
13education, which shall help young people acquire and learn to
14use the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will prepare them
15to be competent and responsible citizens throughout their
16lives. Civics education course content shall focus on

1government institutions, the discussion of current and
2societal issues, service learning, and simulations of the
3democratic process. Civics education in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade
4shall be in accordance with Illinois Learning Standards for
5social science. Additionally, school districts may consult
6with civics education stakeholders, deemed appropriate by the
7State Board of Education, with regards to civics education
8curriculum for 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. School districts may
9utilize private funding available for the purposes of offering
10civics education.
 
11    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect July 1,
122018.".
