HOUSE RESOLUTION 75 Offered by Representative Zickus: WHEREAS, Officer Mark Zvokel was presented an award as the Hickory Hills Police Officer of the Year on February 10, 1999; and WHEREAS, This award is determined by a vote of the Officer's peers; the Hickory Hills Lions Club hosted a dinner to thank and honor law enforcement personnel who have distinguished themselves in the eyes of their colleagues; and WHEREAS, Mark Zvokel was raised in the Village of Lyons; in 1986, he began to pursue a career in law enforcement when he became a Police Cadet with the Hickory Hills Police Department; upon completing the Cadet Program, he became an Auxiliary Police Officer and part-time dispatcher; in 1989, he was sworn in as a full-time officer; he was assigned to patrol duties; he joined the Investigation Division as a Tactical Gang Crimes Officer; in 1997, he became an Investigator within that Division; and WHEREAS, During his career, he has accumulated many commendations for exceptional performance; among them are: uniform and undercover narcotics arrests; gang crimes arrests; major burglary ring arrests; and armed robbery investigations resulting in major arrests; and WHEREAS, Officer Zvokel is to be applauded for his contributions to the safety and welfare of the residents of Hickory Hills; therefore, be it

HOUSE RESOLUTION 76 Offered by Representative Durkin: WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to acknowledge events within the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, The 15th Annual Cystic Fibrosis Casino Fling Day will be held on April 24, 1999 at Navy Pier in Chicago; Casino Fling Day is held for the benefit of the Greater Illinois Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and has raised over $1.4 million since its beginning in 1984; and WHEREAS, Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disorder among Caucasians, with 30,000 children and young adults in North America afflicted by the disease; and WHEREAS, In 1955 the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was founded to raise money for research and to find a cure for this disease; and WHEREAS, Cystic Fibrosis Casino Fling Day helps the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in its attempt to "Invest in research...Buy back life"; therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare April 24, 1999 to be Cystic Fibrosis Casino Fling Day in the State of Illinois; we congratulate the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for their hard work and dedication to finding a cure for this deadly disease; and be it further RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Ashton Chase, Executive Director of the Greater Illinois Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. HOUSE RESOLUTION 79 Offered by Representative Bill Mitchell: WHEREAS, The members of this Body are happy to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the well-being of the citizens of this State; and WHEREAS, David O. Cooprider has announced his retirement as Superintendent of the Macon-Piatt Educational Service Region after nearly 14 years in that position; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cooprider announced in 1997 that he would not seek re-election to a fourth term; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cooprider has devoted 41 years of his life to education; he plans to continue teaching at Richland Community College; and WHEREAS, He has earned the respect and admiration of all those who work for him, and especially the respect of those whom he taught and whose teaching certificates he signed; and WHEREAS, He has been supported throughout his public and private life by his wife, Nancy; therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate David O. 428 JOURNAL OF THE [February 19, 1999] HOUSE RESOLUTION 80 Offered by Representative Bill Mitchell: WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are proud to recognize milestones in the lives of citizens of the State; and WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Mrs. Louise Gentle of Maroa, Illinois is celebrating her 107th birthday this year; and WHEREAS, Anna Louise McLean was born on January 26, 1892; she married George Gentle on December 17, 1918; together they were the parents of four children: Paul Gentle, Mary Holtsclaw, Dorothy Ellinwood, and Robert Gentle; Louise has 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Louise Gentle was born and raised in Maroa; for a brief time she lived elsewhere but returned to Maroa in 1943; she is an active part of the Maroa Methodist Church; Mrs. Gentle served on the Township Library Board in the 1940s and 1950s; before the consolidation of the school system she served on the Maroa Grade School Board; in 1954 she co-authored the Centennial Book for the community; and WHEREAS, 107 years is truly a milestone in one's life; Mrs. Gentle is truly a valuable part of Illinois and deserves to be commended for reaching this landmark age; therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Mrs. Louise Gentle on her 107th birthday; may she enjoy good health and happiness as the years progress; and be it further RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Louise Gentle. HOUSE RESOLUTION 85 Offered by Representative McKeon: WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the alumni of Lake View High School, as they prepare to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the oldest township high school in Illinois; and WHEREAS, In 1873 the voters of Lake View township presented the township treasurer with a petition for the establishment of a high school; the trustees of Graceland Cemetery offered the township the current property at the corner of Irving Park and Ashland, and on May 4, 1874 classes started at the new school; since the school opened its doors it has had only thirteen principals; Dr. nightingale was the first and Mr. Scott Feaman is the current principal; and WHEREAS, Out of the 78 students that first enrolled at the school, only 8 of the students were advanced enough to begin at the high school level; and WHEREAS, The school was gutted by fire in March of 1885, but classes went on at the Evanston Avenue Chapel; a new school was completed in 1886; in 1889 the town of Lake View was incorporated into the City of Chicago, making Lake View High School a member of the Chicago Public School System; and WHEREAS, A four story addition was added to the high school in 1898; in 1916 a new four story addition was erected; a girls gymnasium and a new cafeteria were added in 1939; Campus Park was completed in 1997; and in 1998 a science lab and student health center became the newest additions to Lake View High School and its ever-changing facade; and WHEREAS, Lake View High School has seen admirals, generals, judges, politicians, stars from the entertainment industry, and business leaders graduate from its halls of academia; Edgar Bergen, Gloria Swanson, and Tom Bosley are from the entertainment field; former State Representative Sidney Yates was a graduate; and the Reverend George A. Rice, pastor of the Addison Street Community Church and president of the Friends of Lake View is an alum; Lake View is a proud part of the State of Illinois; with help from the New Lake View Alumni Association and the Friends of Lake View, Lake View High School will soon head into a new century of caring for its students; therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate all those involved in Lake View High School throughout its many years on a job well done; we wish Lake View High School a happy anniversary; may Lake View continue to provide quality education to its students for another 125 years; and be it further RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to a representative of Lake View High School.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 431 HOUSE RESOLUTION 86 Offered by Representative Flowers: WHEREAS, Indigency has been a persistent social problem throughout history and has reached an intolerable level throughout our country; and WHEREAS, People in urban, suburban, and rural areas of Illinois experience indigency, proving that it is not just a big city problem; and WHEREAS, Each year sees an increase in the number of deaths among those who lack funds to provide the barest essentials of life; and WHEREAS, Bitter cold winters and extremely hot summers have cost the lives of those individuals who simply could not afford heating or air coolants and died from exposure; and WHEREAS, In remembering those who have died, we must reach out to help those in need; the extent to which our society can counter the effects of indigency is a good measure of its humaneness; therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we proclaim Wednesday, May, 26, 1999, as "We Remember, We Care for Indigent Persons Day in Illinois", and that we urge all citizens to observe, inform themselves of, and support efforts to care for the indigent; and be it further RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to W. HOUSE RESOLUTION 88 Offered by Representative Lou Jones: WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to honor people within the State that have achieved significant milestones in their lives; and WHEREAS, One such person is Katherine Dunham; born in Joliet, Illinois in 1909, Katherine Dunham is a dancer; she is an entertainer; she is an educator; through hard work, and unbelieveable dedication to her craft, she has changed the face of modern dance, and also has changed many lives as a result; and WHEREAS, In the 1930's Katherine Dunham taught ballet and modern dance at the University of Chicago to pay for her expenses; she joined Chicago's Federal Theatre Project in 1938 and composed her ballet, L'Ag'Ya; while working on her Master's degree in Anthropology she made a trip to the Caribbean and Brazil, where she encountered new dance movements and rhythms that would influence her work; she later moved to New York City and choreographed the Broadway hit Cabin in the Sky; and WHEREAS, In 1939 she married John Pratt, a painter and costume and set designer; they had one adopted daughter, Martinique; and WHEREAS, Katherine Dunham is a professor emeritus and artist-in-residence at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville; she is director of the East St. Louis Performing Arts Center; she has been an advisor to the State Department; she is a lecturer in college and university settings; and WHEREAS, She is a member of the Women's Honorable Scientific Fraternity at the University of Chicago; she is a member of the Royal Society of Anthropologists in London; in 1978 the Katherine Dunham museum was established in East St. Louis, displaying costumes that she has worn in performances, items from her travels, paintings, sculptures, and musical instruments; and WHEREAS, Katherine Dunham received the Albert Schweitzer Music Award in 1979, the Kennedy Center Honors Award in 1983, and honorary

HOUSE RESOLUTION 90 Offered by Representative Lou Jones: WHEREAS, The institution of marriage is one of the cornerstones upon which our society is built, and a marriage that has achieved a notable longevity is truly a model for the people of the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Bradie of Chicago will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage; and WHEREAS, Andrew Bradie and Mary Bradie were united in holy matrimony on February 26, 1949, at the home of the bride's parents in Chicago; and WHEREAS, They are the loving parents of 3 children; the loving grandparents of 5 grandchildren; and the expectant great-grandparents of their first great-grandchild; and WHEREAS, The respect for marriage reaches one of its highest plateaus when a couple such as Andrew and Mary celebrate their golden wedding anniversary; and WHEREAS, Andrew worked in the Parking Industry for 50 years; Mary was busy serving as a homemaker for the family; they are members of St. Dorothy's Parish; and WHEREAS, Andrew and Mary stand as examples of the best of our

HOUSE RESOLUTION 91 Offered by Representative Black: WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to honor citizens within the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and staff of Garfield Elementary School in Danville, Illinois are to be commended for their quick thinking and responsible evacuation of their school during a fire on January 11, 1999; and WHEREAS, As firefighters raced to the school, many worried that there could be someone trapped or injured; they were relieved to find all the students safe and away from danger; through the practice of routine fire drills, everyone involved in the incident was led safely out of the school; and WHEREAS, On February 10, Fire Chief Thomas Lane presented Principal Bill Cooper with a plaque honoring the staff, students, and faculty for their safe and orderly evacuation of the school; Principal Cooper assured those in attendance that the plaque would be placed as a reminder of the fire and the safe evacuation of all involved; and WHEREAS, The staff, students, and faculty are heroes for their quick thinking and the way they have since conformed to their new, temporary relocation; therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the staff, students, and faculty of Garfield Elementary School on a job well done; through the practice of fire drills in the school, a crisis was averted and lives were saved; we also thank the Danville Fire Department for their quick response on what might have been a tragic day, but instead became a day of miracles; and be it further RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Superintendent David Fields and Principal Bill Cooper.
