the son of Joe Campbell and Annie May Sutton; he attended Milligan
College from 1932 to 1934; and he earned a master's degree from the
University of Illinois; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from the University of Missouri in
1937, Mr. Sutton worked as a reporter and editor at the
Champaign-Urbana Courier, he became city editor in 1946; he also was
editor of The Leader, a weekly newspaper in Covington, Tennessee,
from 1938 to 1940; and
WHEREAS, He joined the faculty of the University of Illinois
College of Communications in 1948; Mr. Sutton served as the college's
placement director, chairman of admissions committee, member of the
Illini Publishing Company board, and other college committees; and
WHEREAS, He served as a captain in the 2nd Armored Division
during World War II; he was an elder at the First Presbyterian Church
at Champaign; and
WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family and

WHEREAS, The members of this Body are happy to recognize
individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the well-being
of the citizens of this State; and
WHEREAS, Mayor John Oremus, mayor of Bridgeview, is one of these
individuals; and
WHEREAS, He was born in Chicago on December 29, 1913; as a
sophomore in high school, to help support his family, he worked on a
natural gas pipeline from Oklahoma to Chicago; and
WHEREAS, He later bought a gas station and with one truck, he
began hauling stone from the McCook Quarry and coal from a strip mine
outside of Joliet; and
WHEREAS, In the mid-1940s, he purchased 16 acres of property in
the 7600 block of West 79th Street, where he founded Prairie Material
Sales Inc.; from a staff of two, Mr. Oremus built the business into a
multimillion dollar operation that now employs 2,000 people; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Oremus entered politics in 1953, serving 2 years as
chairman of the village's zoning board of appeals before making his
first successful run for mayor in 1955; and
WHEREAS, He has held the post of Bridgeview's mayor for 40 of the
past 44 years; and
WHEREAS, John Oremus was a strong leader in the community and
south suburbs for the past 4 decades; and
WHEREAS, John Oremus is now stepping down as mayor of Bridgeview;

WHEREAS, Mr. Petersen was born in Gibson City on May 3, 1936; his
parents were Walter and Laura Petersen; on May 28, 1960 he married
Judith Mooney; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Petersen worked for the Urbana Courier from 1959 to
1969; from 1969 to 1974 he worked for the Gibson City Courier,
writing a column entitled "Pete and Re-Pete"; Mr. Petersen served as
a longtime correspondent for The News-Gazette in Champaign; he ran
Remembrance Photography from 1975 to 1998, when he retired; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Petersen served Gibson City as treasurer in 1972 and
as the alderman from the third ward from 1976 to 1980; he was a
supporter of the Open Meetings Act and would let area board members
who met in secret meetings know how he felt about such actions; and
WHEREAS, Ray Petersen is survived by his wife, Judith; his son,
Martin Petersen; his daughters, Krista Holloway, Karin McBride, and
Laura Schwarze; his sister, Norma Newsome; and five grandchildren;
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIRST
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 185
GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
his family and friends, the death of Ray Petersen of Gibson City; may
they find peace in this time of need; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to
the family of Ray Petersen.

Representative Cross then moved the Roll Call be verified.
Pursuant to Rule 18(f), Representative Black then moved that the
Committee of the Whole discuss HOUSE RESOLUTIONS 34 and HOUSE
RESOLUTIONS 11.
The motion lost.
Representative Currie again moved the adoption of HOUSE
RESOLUTION 34.
And on that motion, a vote was taken resulting as follows:
