PART 426 BICYCLE REFLEX REFLECTOR REQUIREMENTS
SECTION 426.7 NOTICE OF FURTHER RULE MAKING

Section 426.7  Notice of Further Rule Making

a)         The area of bicycle reflectorization is undergoing rapid change at this point in time.  The Federal Government recently solicited comments on proposed rules in this area (38 Federal Register, 12300, Thursday, May 10, 1973) and additional legislation in this area is being considered by the 78th Illinois General Assembly.  Therefore, as a practical matter, this Rule must in reality be considered only temporary.  The Department of Transportation, in order to meet the challenges of traffic safety and provide the best protection to user groups, is conducting a continuing investigation into the area of bicycle reflectorization and will develop a more detailed rule with significantly more stringent performance requirements.  This advanced rule when completed will be distributed for public comment.  Copies may be obtained by writing to the docket indicated below.

b)         Comments on the current Rule, the direction of future programs in this area and the desirable strictness of bicycle reflectorization standards are solicited and welcomed.  All comments and inquiries should be addressed to the Department of Transportation, Office of Transportation Safety, 2300 South Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, Illinois 62764.
